On This Day . . .

After leaving the African main land, we arrived at Praia, Ilha de Santiago, Cape Verde on April 19 , 2018. Praia is the capital and largest city in the Cape Verde islands.

We took tour around the island to explore the inland areas as well as a return trip around the rugged coastline. On our way we stopped at the Cape Verdean Botanic Garden and the Tarrafal Concentration Camp.

The  camp was a prison camp in the Portuguese colony of Cape Verde. The penal colony was established by the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. It housed opponents to Portugal's right-wing authoritarian regime.

After the camp we went to Tarrfal and had lunch overlooking the beach and the fishermen bring their catch ashore.
