On This Day . . .
On January 28, 2018, the Amsterdam anchored outside of Alofi, Niue. Niue is one of the world's largest coral islands. Also one of the largest raised coral atolls on earth. The terrain consists of steep limestone cliffs along the coast with a central plateau rising to about 60 meters above sea level. Niue is one of the world's smallest countries, and for now, it remains one of the least “discovered” by the travel industry.
The day was Sunday, so everything was closed except a museum and the tourist office. The tender operation was challenging due to the swell and the steep steps on the pier. We walked up and down the main street in town past the cemetery, museum and government buildings. The view from the plateau had some great views of the Amsterdam at anchor and the surrounding sea.
