On March 29, 2017, we traveled to Petra, The Rose City, one of the new seven wonders of the World. Petra is a 2 and a half hour drive from Aqaba through desert and mountain ranges and past many Bedouin camps. Once at the site, there is about a 20 minute down hill walk past some tombs carved out of the rock to the entrance of the the Siq which leads to the city. The Siq is a long narrow natural pass cut through the mountains that opens up into a valley that is now known as Petra. At the end of the Siq is a very large and ornate tomb called The Treasury. As you leave the Treasury and head down into the valley you pass many smaller tombs on The Street of Façades and then a theater carved completely into the cliff. Passing the theater the next major site is the Royal Tombs, three very large tombs with intricate carvings. Below the Royal Tombs is the marble road that leads to the roman ruins and the main temple of Petra. We left Petra via a back road on donkeys to the new Bedouin town passing more ruins along the way.
