On This Day . . .

On March 15, 2017, we traveled to Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, after docking in Colombo, Sri Lanka. On our way we stopped at the Handunugoda Tea Estate, the only producer of Virgin White Tea in Sri Lanka. Here we took tour of the grounds and sampled the tea in the owners home. After visiting the tea estate, we stopped just outside of Galle to watch the stilt fishermen, that sit on poles while they fish. Then it was off to Galle Fort, that was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. Today it is still a thriving community. On our way out of Galle we passed the Fish Market and local fishermen tending to there boats and nets.
