On This Day . . .

February 15, 2016, found us in Townsville, Australia, a town that lies just off the Great Barrier Reef. Our dock was about 2 miles away from the center of town, so we took the shuttle bus which got us to Flinders Street. Flinders Street was lined with buildings that were of Art Deco architecture and were well restored. At the end of the street was reef HQ, the largest coral reef aquarium, which is maintained by Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and houses 130 coral reef species and 120 fish species. After spending some time in the aquarium we drove along the Strand, a walk way and green belt along the water. Since this was stingray season, swimming was not permitted on the beaches however there were salt water pools on the shore for people’s enjoyment. The town is shadowed by a large hill called Castle Rock, a landmark that can be seen for miles.
