On This Day . . .

fter leaving Picton we had 4 days, crossing the Tasman Sea, to reach our next port of Melbourne, Australia on February 8, 2016. We decided to take one of the self guided walks around town called “Arcades and Lanes” which meandered though the Center of Melbourne. To get to the center of town from the pier we had to take a tram ride of 2.5 miles. Once in town we started our walk beginning with one of the covered arcades called Block Arcade with its’ highly decorated tile floors. Leaving Block Arcade we crossed Little Colins Street and entered the Royal Arcade, Australia’s oldest shopping arcade, that features Gog & Magog, two legendary giants that have struck on the hour since 1892. Next on the walk was the old warehouse district which now house shops and restaurants. We went back towards the river to view the Manchester Unity Arcade and finally Flinders Street Station. Walking back to our tram stop we went through the Center Place Bistros and then passed 333 Colins Street with its domed ceiling and finally a bank that was built to look like a church.
