On This Day . . .
We traveled up the Yangon River to dock in a cargo port just outside of Yangon, Myanmar, formally Rangoon, Burma on March 10,2015. We took a tour to Yangon to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda. On our way to the city we went through the rural countryside and its rice fields. After crossing the Yangon River we entered Yangon and went to the Shwedagon Pagoda. The Pagoda is situated on Singuttara Hill and stands 325 feet tall and is surrounded by many side shrines. To get up the hill you can take an elevator, which we did. Once there we traveled around the pagoda in a clockwise direction taking in the many shrines and prayers going on. As the sun set the gold stupa was engulfed in its light before the whole area was artificially illuminated for the night.
