On This Day . . .

The morning of April 4, 2014 found is docked in Walvis Bay, Namibia, on the edge of the Namib Desert on the coast of southern Africa. We took a Land Rover tour into the desert to see some of the creatures that reside there. On our way out we passed many small single family homes on the outskirts of Walvis Bay, situated between the desert and the ocean. We traveled in a convoy of 6 vehicles which made stops when the guide spotted a creature or trail. Our first sighting was a sidewinder that lives among the few plants that are there. Next we came across a Chameleon trail that led over the dune. The guide climbed over the dune and then came back with a Namaqua Chameleon, which he kept to get tagged and then released. Another find was a Namib Dune Gecko, which is a nocturnal creature that buries it’s self in the sand during the day. The views of the shifting sand and dunes are quite amazing and constantly moving. On the way back we stopped in the Walvis Bay Lagoon to see the large colony of flamingos that live there. As usual there is always some craft people set up near the port entrance.
