On This Day . . .

On January 27, 2014 we docked in Papeete, Tahiti, the first of 3 islands in French Polynesia. Since we were here on February 28, 2013 (See: Papeete Tahiti in 2013), we decided to tour the town of Papeete, which is right outside the pier. When you leave the ship you are greeted by singers on the pier. When you leave the port there is a very nice welcome center and craft market, with local singers and dancers performing throughout the day. After leaving the welcome center we went to Le Marche, the municipal market. This market has crafts, flowers, produce, fish and meat and is always active. We than went to the Notre Dame Cathedral and then on to the Town Hall. Upon returning to the ship there were some students that had exhibits of the local heritage of French Polynesia by the welcome center. At night several Food Trucks come into town and set up in the park next to the pier, where locals come for all types of cuisines. Later that night there was a local folkloric show on the ship by Tahiti Oro dance group.
