On This Day . . .
On April 17, 2015 we docked in Cartagena, Spain at 10 AM. Today we went to Elche about an hour away. Elche is known for its Palm Forest another UNESCO World heritage site that was built by the Moors when they occupied Spain. Situated in the dry part of Europe the oasis of palms was something to see. We started out in the old city visiting the Basilica St. Maria and the Municipal Park which is part of the forest. We then crossed the Elche River, with its highly decorated floor and went to the Priest’s Garden. Here was a collection of plants from all over the world, dating back to 1918. Of particular interest was the stunning Cactus Garden with a reflecting pond in front.
