On This Day . . .
We anchored in Kuto Bay off Ile des Pins, New Caledonia on February 8, 2014. The island was discovered by Captain Cook who gave the island its name after seeing the tall native pines. After a short 10 minute tender ride we ventured out to explore a small part of this beautiful island. The tender let us out on Kuto Beach and from there we took a short walk though the forest to another bay, Kanumera Bay, where the sacred rock can be seen. All around this part of the island there were locals weaving palm leaves into various items. There was also a local folkloric group doing Kanak dances on the beach. Other locals were preparing and selling local dishes that were cooked in palm baskets.
